Taiwan Gender Equity Education Association (TGEEA)
台灣性別平等教育協會
Taiwan Gender Equity Education Association (TGEEA), founded in 2002 by a group of school teachers and social activists, aspires to achieve gender justice and diversity in Taiwan through education. We aim to support teachers and educational institutions through policy advocacy, as well as the development and dissemination of localized, culturally-relevant and inclusive gender equity education materials.
Since our founding in 2002, TGEEA has taken on the follow-up assistance of the Yeh Yung-Chih case, accompanying the family through a lengthy judicial process. We also participated in the legislative advocacy for the "Gender Equity Education Act." The Act was passed in 2004, ushering in an era of legalization of gender equity education in Taiwan.
Many passionate educators with gender equality awareness aim to teach children about diversity. However, standard curriculum materials alone makes in-depth discussions difficult. As TGEEA is composed of grassroots teachers, we understand these challenges and have developed diverse teaching materials since our founding. In 2012, we published Taiwan's first board game on diverse families, called "Home Play"! We also compiled years of teaching experience into resources, enabling children and educators to start conversations and expand their imaginations in gameplay!
Taiwan has incorporated several United Nations human rights conventions into domestic law and established an international review mechanism to affirm its commitment to human rights. Since 2013, TGEEA has actively participated in the international review of Taiwan’s national reports on conventions like the ICCPR, ICESCR CEDAW, and CRC. By submitting parallel reports and engaging with international experts, TGEEA assists these committees understand gender equity education in Taiwan and advocates for human rights protection.
Since Taiwan passed the Gender Equity Education Act in 2004, gender equity education has been in schools for 20 years. However, to ensure the inclusion of every unique and precious life and prevent the recurrence of historical tragedies, gender equity must extend beyond schools. It is essential to provide gender equity education for teachers, parents, and the community as well. Starting in 2021, TGEEA began hosting monthly Gender Equity Saturday public lectures, inviting people who care about gender issues to dedicate one Saturday each month to engage in open discussions, share their gender-related experiences, and foster a culture of gender equity.
TGEEA has long built international connections, learning from other countries’ gender equality education models, while sharing Taiwan’s unique experience. In 2023, we invited scholars, teachers, and advocacy workers from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, and from within Taiwan to participate in a forum on comprehensive sexuality education. The forum attracted nearly 400 domestic and foreign audiences. It sparked discussions on comprehensive sexuality education in Taiwan, and Minister of Education Pan Wenchung attended, promising further promotion of comprehensive sexuality education by the Ministry.
